How to Clean and Oil Your Sewing Machine

Cleaning and oiling your sewing machine is basic maintenance that can help your machine last longer and perform more smoothly. If you sew regularly little bits of lint, thread, and dust can get stuck in your machine. This can cause your sewing machine to jam up. You should clean your machine regularly to prevent this problem, you should also oil your machine to help the moving parts of your machine function smoothly. You should clean and oil your machine after finishing any large project or after 8 hours of continuous sewing or embroidery time. If you don't sew that often it is a good idea to clean and oil your machine before starting a new project.

NOTE: Most sewing machines (new & old) require sewing machine oil in the bobbin case area.
Hi! I just finished this little project and I just love how it turned out so I want to share a picture of it.

Now that I know what was wrong with my planned instructions and pattern I can fix them. I hope to have this project added to the website soon. The embroidery shown is from a group I've been working on that were inspired by Folk Art Batiks. These are part of the honeysuckle group.

This is another fast little project that is fun to embroider and sew together. There are four embroidery placements. The oval opening comes out cleanly and is so easy to do! Coming soon.

Forum: Machine Embroidery Designs

book cover project is available 8/24/2011

I have completed the new Book Cover Project and it is now available online here.

Here is a picture of a spiral notebook that I covered using this project download:

This download does not include any embroidery designs because it is more fun to pick your own. The instructions walk you through making pattern pieces sized exactly for your choice of book to cover. It will give you a perfect fit every time! There is nothing more frustrating than to try to make a fabric book cover and get a bad fit. If it's too small, the book won't close; if it's too big, it looks sloppy. These instructions make it possible to nail the fit every time.

This project is great for making personalized machine embroidered gifts that won't break the bank. It takes about a half yard of quilt weight fabric and a half yard of craft weight interfacing to make one and it takes less than two hours to whip one out.

Forum: Machine Embroidery Designs

My favorite embroidery thread

Hi! I got a question about embroidery thread today that might be of interest to others:

Sieglinde asked:
I love your designs and have purchased several over the last couple of years. I saw your butterfly bundle package and have always wondered what the embroidery thread and color is that you used. Obviously it is a gold or metallic thread, but what brand?

My answer:
I always use rayon thread. I don't ever use metallic. It was probably Robison Anton, but I do have a lot of Madera rayon thread too. I cannot remember whether it was Robison Anton's Buttercup or Mango, but it probably was one of these. Hope this helps!

I like rayon best because it has a nap like velvet and reflects the light one way and absorbs the light the other so it gives the stitched design more depth.

Sieglinde replied:
<span style="font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: " calibri","sans-serif";="" color:="" #1f497d;"="">
<span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: " calibri","sans-serif";"="">Yes, as a matter of fact it was a big help. I would never have guessed that it was not metallic from the pictures. I have never used rayon thread before. I am going to stitch one your butterflies as soon as I can purchase some rayon thread to try it out! <span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: " calibri","sans-serif";"="">Thank you very much.

Forum: Susa's Tips and Techniques
